We had so much fun on Saturday! We helped give away over 40,000 books to children in a one day event called “Home Library for the Holidays.” The event was presented by First Book and sponsored by Molina Healthcare, American Federation of Teachers, Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association, United Way Suncoast. and us!
People starting lining up at 7 am for the 9 am event at the Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association building on Habana Avenue. “It was so wonderful to see people lined up for books as if it were Black Friday!” said Alliance for Public Schools Executive Director, Melissa Erickson. Children and teachers were able to browse through a huge tent to pick out their own books. Titles ranged from Disney classics to the Percy Jackson series. Spanish language titles were available, as well.
We were joined by so many volunteers and friends. One of our Student Alliance for Public Schools’ leaders stopped by and talked to reporters about her love of reading and the importance of books in her life.
Maria Fleitas, a 15-year-old sophomore at Leto High School, said she came to Saturday’s event looking for adventure books and maybe something related to her biology class at school.
Maria said she loves reading both in and outside of the classroom.
“When I’m like sad or something or so happy, I just want to get into another world,” she said. “That’s why I read.” (Tampa Tribune)
We want to thank First Book, Molina Healthcare and American Federation of Teachers for making this event possible!
